DITAS project (Data-intensive applications Improvement by moving daTA and computation in mixed cloud/fog environmentS) goes in this direction by proposing a novel approach for developing data-intensive applications based on Virtual Data Containers (VDC), which let the developers simply define the requirements on the needed data, expressed as data utility, and take the responsibility of providing these data timely, securely, and accurate by hiding the complex underlying infrastructure composed by different platforms, storage systems, and network capabilities.

To achieve this goal, Virtual Data Container will implement data and computation movement strategies to decide where, when, and how to save data – on the cloud or on the edge of the network – and where, when, and how to compute part of the tasks composing the application to create a synergy between traditional and cloud approaches able to find a good balance between reliability, security, sustainability, and cost.
